Artificial Linking Schemes

Getting irrelevant links for your websites by paying companies is not recommended. Avoid SEOs that promise hundreds of links to your site. One QUALITY link is worth a thousand ARTIFICIAL links. In fact, participating in these schemes can even cause your website to be removed by a search engine. WHY? Just think of it this ways- If a user searches for ‘hotels in Hong Kong’ and discovers your website that sells watches, wouldn’t that sabotage the image of the search engine? All that a search engine has to do is, return RELEVANT CONTENT on searches and these useless multiple links would affect their that very service.

This report noted that many websites do not follow best practice coding standards. While a normal web browser is lenient on technical errors, a search engine browser (automated system) is not, and your website may be altogether invisible to major search engines. After launching an image search feature “Similar Images”, Google is now firing back at Bing with a brand new visual image search feature “Image Swirl”. Google Image Swirl should not to be confused with “Bing’s Visual Search” where image works by building groups or bunch of related images.

Here, when you search images for your search term, you get different bunch of small pictures. For example, when you search for apple and click one of the images appeared, it looks like this:

Google Image Swirl uses the same technology as “Similar Images” and “Picasa Face Recognition” to analyze images in groups and in hierarchies. Every image is analyzed as the best representative image in a particular group or cluster.

Google Ranking: Page speed may consider as Ranking Factor in 2010

In the year 2009, “Google” grabbed the attention of SEO people by making a number of announcements, whether it was adding some new features or launching different new ways of search. Google was the king of SEO news for the whole year.

Continuing the same, Google’s Software Engineer Matt Cutts has given a hint that from the next year Google may consider page loading time as a ranking factor. In an interview given to WebPro news, Matt Cutts says, “Historically, we haven’t had to use it in our search rankings, but a lot of people within Google think that the web should be fast and I think a lot of people in 2010 are going to be thinking more about ‘how do I have my site be fast’”.

In the same series Google recently announced a Site Speed site, which provides webmasters with even more resources specifically aimed at speeding up their pages. Some of these tools come from Google itself while there are a number of tools Google points you to from other developers as well.

It is not yet clear how Google is going to implement site ranking based on site speed, if indeed there is such a plan but if you are serious about your site to perform better in search engines, and yet you haven’t given much thought to page loading time, it’s time to be serious about it.

Google Now uses RSS/Atom Feeds to Discover New URLs

Google has recently announced in its Webmaster Central Blog that it will now use RSS/Atom feeds to discover new webpages. RSS/Atom feeds have been very popular in recent years as a mechanism for content publication. Using feeds for discovery allows Google to get the new page index more quickly than conventional crawling methods. Google may use many potential sources to access updates from feeds including Reader, notification services, or direct crawls of feeds. How does it benefit? The answer is that this feature will make your site/blogs indexed even if you don’t submit a website sitemap to Google.

But the most important thing is that to use your RSS/Atom feeds for discovery, it’s important that crawling these files are not disallowed by your robots.txt (A robots.txt file restricts access to your site by search engine robots that crawl the web). So, now Google is indexing not only contents found on websites and blogs but also those contents that are syndicated from them through RSS/Atom feeds.

Most of us have already heard about Google Custom Search, but still I’ll give you a brief introduction. Google Custom Search is a platform provided by Google that allows web developers to feature specialized information in web searches, refine and categorize Google Web Search queries and create customized search engines. It was launched on 10th May, 2006.

After three years of success Google Custom Search now has more than a million users serving many tens of millions of search queries daily and it is also now among the top two widgets available online, used by many small and big business entities. And to celebrate its third anniversary, Google has just included three new useful features of its Custom Search engine.

Custom Search Themes — Now with the ultra-configurable Element you can select from among a set of layouts and styles to use for your search results pages.  The themes are easily customizable and won’t lock you into the same uniform format.

Structured Custom Search — Google Custom Search results will now provide thumbnails and actions. You can now also restrict your search results according to these attributes based on the metadata that you provide. Custom metadata attributes and custom query restricts will make your searches truly structured.

king1Wikipedia Custom Search Skin — Google now puts search across all Wikipedia articles hence providing your users with highly contextual search results when searching within Wikipedia. You will get Google search across all Wikipedia articles as well as topical results based on the links on the Wikipedia article you are currently reading.

Google Social Search is Live

The experimental Google Social Search service went live on 26th October, 2009 at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco. Google Social Search helps you find relevant public web content from people in your social circle via your Google Account. For example, if you search for [New York], Google Social Search includes your friend’s blog on the results page under the heading “Results from people in your social circle for New York.” And it should be available for everyone to try by the end of the day.

Google Social Search is good news because you can now get additional search results whenever you query Google for information. Those additional results do not appear based on any algorithm or Google-biased data but it comes from your social graph, the people in your social circle that Google knows about. However for this, Google must know about your social circle. This is possible if you have added a Google Profile, or use Google Reader, or Google Chat.

With Google Social Search, you will be able to find relevant public content from your social circle easily; your social circle consists of contacts from Gmail and sites listed in your Google profile; you can improve your social search results by expanding your social circle by creating a Google profile and encouraging your friends to publish content online.
